USA CX Nationals: Easton Gets Pitted

Easton CX was on the ground for the 2019 USAC Cyclocross Nationals in Ft. Steilacoom, WA. Having the races so close to our Canadian offices in Vancouver allowed us to send a team down, including a pro mechanic, photographer/videographer, and support crew to assist our teams and athletes.

Getting to experience one of the largest events of the 2019 North American cyclocross season was truly awe-inspiring. From Masters categories topping the 70+ age category to team relays, there was something for everyone. The atmosphere was festive yet focused with big crowds, plenty of team mechanics in the pits, and a singlespeed category of over 150 men and almost 50 women.

The big show happened on Sunday. Watching the elite men and women crush through a course that so many others struggled on was impressive, even with the addition of UCI-only technical lines.

Hometown favourite Courtenay McFadden (Pivot Maxxis) was in peak form and looking to atone for her placing at the Pan Am Games earlier this fall.

With a strong start that ensured she was a podium threat, McFadden endured a hard-found battle to find herself with a well-earned but heartbreaking 4th place.

“Reflecting back, I had so much focus in this race, stayed the course and focused on my actions and my race and didn't worry about anything else that was going on. The roars of the crowd screaming my name powered me every time I had to run the ups and left me with a big smile on the downs. The amount of community support I felt out there was all I needed to be reminded that the Seattle Cyclocross community is the best CX community out there.”

The last race of the day had Grant Ellwood (Pivot Maxxis) rubbing tires and elbows with a strong elite men’s field. Lining up in the second row, he was also focused on a strong start to keep him out of the chaos. Moving steadily through the group on the straight pavement start and passing a few more riders up the first run up put him in 3rd for the first descent.

“From there it was pedal to the metal and try and ride smooth. I found myself sitting just off the leaders in 6th for the first half of the race until a hard charging Drew Dillman and Logan Owen caught me and the remainder of the race we were shuffling around.”
